Section 10.8 Solved Problems (pg. 97)
Section 10.8.1 Coriolis Effect
Example:
Find the drift, x, off the vertical of an object dropped in an
open shaft when it reaches a depth of 300m (1,000 feet)
below the collar.
Facts:
1. The angular velocity of the earth, w =0.0000729
r/s
2. The depth dropped, h =300m
3. The Latitude at the minesite =48 degrees N
Solution:
x =2/3 × 0.0000729 [2 × 3003/9.81]1/2 cos 48°
=76mm (3 inches)
