sible corrosion of the high-pressure pump (usually a piston
pump). The high-pressure cloth washing system is essential
to ensure that the permeability of the filter cloth is main-
tained throughout the life of the cloth (in fact, the cloth life
is extended by this process). Without this automatic sys-
tem, there will be a gradual decrease in permeability which
means the filtration rate will reduce (this can happen within
a few days). Manual high-pressure cloth washing cannot be
considered for this scale of filtration plant.
Turbidity
Turbidity can be either manually or automatically moni-
tored. Turbidity meters can be installed on the filtrate man-
ifold of each filter. Sample taps can be provided on each
filter plate to make cloth damage easier to pinpoint within
the plate pack.

To maintain a clean filtrate, it is important to ensure that
the filter cloths are in good condition with no damage to
