centration and Cf (mg/L): the final concentration t (s): the
time Ae (m2): the area of the anode.
Batch Experiments
Batch mode experiments were conducted by recirculating
160 mg/L thiocyanate solution with a volume of 25 mL for
180 minutes. The applied voltage was 5 V, and the flow rate
was kept constant at 1.5 mL/min.
The amount of residual thiocyanate was determined at
various time intervals for 180 minutes.
Effect of Operating Parameters
The influence of applied voltage and influent concentration
on the removal of thiocyanate was investigated. The elec-
trochemical cell shown in Figure 1b was operated for 180
minutes in all experiments in this section. The amount of
thiocyanate in the effluent was determined at various time
intervals.
The effect of applied voltage on the removal of thiocya-
nate from 5 mg/L thiocyanate solution was investigated by
varying the voltage to 1 V, 3 V, and 5 V. During operation,
thiocyanate solution was continuously pumped into the
cell at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min.
The effect of influent concentration on desalination
performance were tested for 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and 20 mg/L
thiocyanate solutions. The electrochemical cell was oper-
ated at a constant voltage of 3 V and a flow rate of 1.5 mL/
min. The range of operating parameters selected was based
on the size and scale of the cell and the experimental setup.
Real Mine Water Tests
Process water from a gold mine in Turkey (Table 1) was
used to investigate the effect of real mine water compo-
nents on desalination performance. During operation, feed
water was continuously pumped at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/
min and the operating voltage was set at 5 V. The efflu-
ent samples were analyzed to determine the amount of
